On February 9, 2019, BlockDevs Asia held its 16th meetup at C Estates’ office in BGC, Taguig. This session was a coding exercise on building a game on blockchain using Loom. At the end of the day, the attendees were able to create their own Ethereum-based game and had a better understanding on the basic concepts of blockchain.

We used CryptoZombies as our main guide in learning Solidity. It is an interactive tutorial for anyone who wants to learn how to build smart contracts in Ethereum. Solidity is Ethereum’s programming language for building smart contracts.

Brent sharing his knowledge on Solidity.

While anyone can go through CryptoZombies at their own pace, being on a meetup like ours has advantages. First, we have skilled mentors who can assist you with your immediate questions. Second, you get to collaborate with co-developers and learn from each other. And third, you get a chance to speak in front and share your knowledge as well. Brent Tudas, who was one of the winners of our DISH 2018 challenge, willingly shared what he knows about Solidity during the meetup.

We give opportunities to anyone who’d like to showcase their skills. We also encourage them to share with the community. In fact, Brent also shared his article to BlockDevs Asia wherein he discussed different types of blockchains for different types of solutions.

Caspar explaining to core concepts of blockchain.

One of the good takeaways from this meetup was the comprehensive, and yet easy to grasp introduction to blockchain by Caspar. He nailed it by explaining the core concepts of blockchain, like, hashing, proof-of-work, 51% attack, replay attack, etc. in a way that any newbie would understand. We even played a game that tackled the concepts of mining.

The attendees went home with smiles on their faces. Building a game on blockchain is just one of the things that you’d learn from our meetups. Blockchain may seem a bit overwhelming to understand for most people who are still starting, but being part of our community will surely boost your knowledge and confidence about it. We were happy to see some new faces and we were glad to see our regulars as well.

See you at our next meetup on February 23. Be one of the firsts to take a closer look at Ethereum 2.0. Register here: https://www.meetup.com/blockdevsasia/events/258918595/
